Additional Information

In 1901, the first Amateur Championship concluded the MGA's inaugural meeting at the Meadow Brook Club in Winona. Despite the fact the Championship was not conducted in 1942-1944 due to the war, it remains one of the oldest golf championships in the state.  Past champions include Harry Legg (10), Jimmy Johnson (7), Pat Sawyer (5) and some other notables like Tom Lehman, Tim Herron and John Harris.

The MGA Amateur also is one of the largest golfing events in the state with over 800 people entering the championship every year. It takes ten or more qualifying sites around the state to narrow down the competitors to a starting field of 156.

Last year, Donald Constable (Spring Hill GC) claimed his first Amateur title with a solid seven-under par, 206 total, at the White Bear Yacht Club in White Bear Lake. While his 206 total tied his total from 2010 when he finished second to Tom Hoge, this time his rounds of 66-71-69 were good enough for a three-stroke victory over Dillon Schultz (Springfield CC) and Yacht Club member Adam Riddering.  Schultz tied Riddering for second at 209 by closing with a 66.  The pair of 66s by Constable and Schultz were the low rounds for the tournament.  Sam Matthew (Midland Hills CC - 211) and Sammy Schmitz (Valleywood GC-212) were alone in fourth and fifth, respectively.  The foursome of David Smith (Rush Creek GC), Jon Dutoit (Chaska TC), Robert Bell (Les Bolstad/University GC) and 1997 Champion David Christensen (Elk River CC) shared sixth at even-par, 213.  LeSueur's Jesse Larson rounded out the top ten at 214.

The 109th MGA Amateur Championship will be held at the Hastings Country Club.  A Donald Ross design, the Yacht Club will provide a totally different playing experience than Dacotah Ridge. It requires precision on both the tee shots and approach shots as well as an exceptional short game.  Driving distance will not be the advantage for the players at the Yacht Club as it was at Dacotah Ridge.
