BEDMINSTER, N.J. – Playing in her first major championship as a professional, Winsonsin’s Casey Danielson carded a 4-over par 76 Thursday to begin the U.S. Women’s Open at Trump National Golf Club.
Danielson, a native of Osceola, Wis., and recent Stanford University graduate, qualified for the championship by carding a 2-under par 142 in late May, just days after turning professional.
A steady start for Danielson Thursday, who carded eight consecutive pars before taking bogey at the ninth to turn at 1-over, but would struggle on the final nine with four bogeys in a span of seven holes before rolling in her first birdie of the round at the par-4 17th to finish the opening round of competition at 4-over par 76.
Danielson will begin her second round at 11:45 a.m. Friday at Trump National Golf Club.
China's Shanshan Feng rolled in six birdies during the opening round Thursday to pace the field at 6-under par 66.
