November 18, 2024
STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Advancing to match play at the 2019 U.S. Junior Girls’ Championship Tuesday, Minnesotan Isabella McCauley fell to Florida’s Erika Smith during the Round of 64 at SentryWorld.
McCauley, from Inver Grove Heights, Minn., opened the championship with a round of 2-over 74 Monday and survived the cut for match play thanks to a late birdie Tuesday, posting a round of 75 to faceoff against Smith Wednesday.
Falling 2-down early, McCauley answered with a birdie at the third hole before Smith won the fifth and eighth holes. The two traded blows on each of the next five holes before Smith’s birdie at the 13th gave her a 4-up advantage.
McCauley battled back to win the 14th and 16th holes to narrow Smith’s margin, but the two would both par the 17th, giving Smith the victory, 2 and 1.
