Not yet in 8th Grade, Homgren Leads Junior Boys Tournament

July 12, 2012 | 1 min.

ROCHESTER -- Van Holmgren, the youngest of the three brothers who play for the Wayzata High School team, is in first place after the opening round of the Minnesota State Junior Boys Championship.

Holmgren, who will be an eighth-grader in a few weeks, made two birdies and two bogeys as he shot an even-par 70 at Rochester Golf & Country Club. That has him one stroke ahead of Karter Smith, who capped off his junior year at Detroit Lakes by tying for second in the Class AA part of the state high school tournament.

(Like brother, like sister -- Smith's younger sister Kate is tied for second after the first round of the State Junior Girls Championship at Oak Marsh GC in Oakdale.)

Two seniors-to-be -- Jacques Wilson of Minnetonka and Jack Pexa of New Prague -- are tied for third, at 72, with one round remaining.
