CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Surviving a 16-for-12 playoff early Monday, Minnesotan Bradley Wohlers fell to Stewart Hagestad during the opening round of play at the 2018 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at the Charlotte Country Club.
Wohlers, from Vadnais Heights, Minn., carded a 3-over par 74 to begin the championship Saturday and followed it with a round of 73 during the final round of stroke play Sunday to finish in a tie for 53rd at 147.
Carding par on the first playoff hole, Wohlers advanced to match play, but ran into trouble early and often against Hagestad. Taking a 2-up lead through four, Hagestad holed out for eagle at the par-4 to extend his lead before carding birdie at the sixth to lead Wohlers, 4-up.
Winning the seventh and eighth holes, Hagestad took a resounding 6-up lead to the final nine holes where he would win the 11th and 12th holes with a pair of birdies to close out the match, 8 and 6.
Sammy Schmitz, from Farmington, Minn., posted an opening-round 78 Saturday and with a round of 74 Sunday, was unable to make up enough ground to qualify for match play. Schmitz won the 2015 championship at John’s Island Club in Vero Beach, Fla., earning a spot in the 2016 Masters Tournament.
Bryce Hanstad, who resides in St. Louis Park, Minn., shot an 84 to begin play Saturday, but bounced back by posting a round of 76 Sunday, missing the cut for match play. Hanstad won the 2007 Minnesota Golf Association Amateur Championship when it was contested at Hazeltine National Golf Club.
