Buege & Sealy Tied with Schomer & Sommers at Minus-8 in Mixed Team Championship

June 25, 2012 | 1 min.

BECKER -- McCabe Buege, who was a freshman on the University of Central Florida men's golf team this year, collaborated with Monifa Sealy of the UCF women's team on Monday to shoot an 8-under-par 64 at Pebble Creek GC. That earned them a 50-percent share of the first-round lead, along with Daryl Schommer and Samantha Sommers, in the MGA Mixed Team (Co-ed) Championship.

Buege and Sealy, who is from Trinidad and Tobago, birdied five of the first nine holes, and also three of the last four.

Schomer, who took over as the head coach of the College of St. Benedict women's golf team last fall, and Sommers, a former three-time state high school champion who went on to play for the University of Minnesota, concentrated their birdies into even tighter bunches. After parring the first hole, they birdied the next four in a row, plus the eighth, on the way to a front-nine 31.

They parred the 10th, but birdied the 11th, 12th and 14th holes, then parred the last four on their way to 64.

There is a three-way tie for third at 66 going into Tuesday's final round, and it includes former champs J.T. Johnson and Leigh Klasse (2009). The defending champs, Dave Carothers and Claudia Pilot, are in sixth place after a 67.
