Annual Ms. and Mr. Minnesota Golf Award Scuttled by COVID-19

EDINA, Minn. (May 12, 2020) – The Ms. and Mr. Minnesota Golf Committee today announced its decision to forgo awarding the annual Ms. and Mr. Minnesota Golf title to the top individual high school senior male and female golfer.

On April 24, the Minnesota State High School League board cancelled spring athletics consistent with Governor Walz’s Emergency Executive Order 20-41 issued the day before, which extended the distance learning period through the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.

“We did not come to this decision lightly, especially with the momentum of the award that has been built over the last few years,” said Phil Ebner, chair of the committee, adding, “Without having a MSHSL spring golf season, it is nearly impossible to identify the 16 male and female finalists and select the winners.”

Now in its fifth year, the committee canvasses the top high school senior golfers based on their final season performances, plus other criteria, to identify the top eight finalists by gender. The winner is announced at a banquet hosted by Windsong Farm Golf Club, in Independence, Minn., the Sunday evening prior to the state high school golf tournament.
  
“For all of the seniors who never got to compete in their last high school golf season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we want them to know that the Class of 2020 will be identified as the winners of the 2020 Ms. and Mr. Minnesota Golf Award,” Ebner said.

About the Ms. and Mr. Minnesota Golf Award
The annual award was created in 2016 to recognize the outstanding male and female high school senior golfer based on their performance on the golf course, academic achievement and strength of character. Finalists are chosen by a committee of high school coaches and amateur golf representatives.
