July 1-2, 2013
A team must be comprised of one male and one female. Entrants in the Husband/Wife division must be married to each other at the time of the Championship. All teams are eligible for the Overall Championship.
NOTE: Players do not need to be from the same club.
In 1991, the MGA created the Mixed Team Championship featuring two-player teams made up of a man and a woman. The 36-hole, stroke play event offers two different formats. The first round is a Four-Ball format, while the second round is a Modified Chapman. A Modified Chapman is an alternate shot format where both players play a tee shot then play their partner's ball for the second shot. After both players have hit two strokes, the team elects which ball they will continue to play for the hole and continue to alternate until the ball is holed.
Competition is held in two divisions - Husband/Wife and Mixed - with scoring both Gross and Net. The team with the lowest 36-hole gross score, regardless of division, will be the Overall Champions.
In 2011, Claudia Pilot (Austin CC), a winner in nine previous Mixed Team Championships (one overall title and eight Husband/Wife titles) had a decision to make. Her husband and partner, Dave, was going to be out of town and unavailable to play, so was faced with the decision to pass up playing or find another partner. Claudia, one not to pass up playing in many events, especially one in which she has had much success, called close friend Dave Carothers (Wild Marsh GC) and asked if he would be interested. He willingly accepted the invitation - something he would not regret.
After opening with a 7-under par 65 and taking the first round lead, Pilot/Carothers came back with an outstanding 6-under 66 in the Modified Chapman format for a 11-under par 131 total. However, their title was not assured until they made a birdie on their penultimate hole. Finishing in a tie for second only one stroke back were the teams of Olivia Lansing (White Bear YC) and new partner Jon Trasamar (University/Les Bolstad GC) and the sister/brother act of Betsy/Maxton Kelly (Forest Hills GC). For Lansing, she had to find a new partner in order to defend her 2011 title after Ben Freeman turned professional. For the Kellys, they were a staggering six shots back after Day 1. However, theycaught fire and recorded an incredible 11-under par 61 and claimed the Gross Division title in the Mixed Division.
The other awards saw Olivia's sister and dad, Natalie & Tom Lansing, take the Mixed Division Net Title, while Julie & Brett Andrich and Deb & Mark Hayes took the Gross and Net titles (respectively) in the Husband/Wife Division.
For 2012, Pilot has yet another decision to make - does she go back and play with husband Dave or keep her new partner Dave? Only time will tell...
