Tournament Information

Entry Fees:

Deadline:  Monday, April 30, 2012

Entry Fee:  Players attempting to qualify will pay a $75 fee.  All successful qualifiers will pay an additional $50 Championship fee.  All exempt players will pay the full $125 fee.

Sectional Qualifying events are limited to a maximum of 84 players.

Players are encouraged to enter all MGA events online.  Entry forms will not be accepted prior to Monday, April 2, 2012, but must arrive by the deadline of Monday, April 30, 2012, at the office of the Minnesota Golf Association.  Entry into a Sectional Qualifying event is on a first-come basis, and the entry fee must accompany the entry form.  If a player is submitting a paper application, preference for the top four qualifying sites should be indicated.  The player will be assigned to the highest ranked site with openings available at the time of processing.

Late or incomplete entries are not acceptable and will be returned.  Entries submitted by telephone, email or fax are not acceptable.  Time limit for entries means time of receipt by the MGA.

Entries with insufficient funds will be considered incomplete and will be withdrawn.  The entrant is responsible for any fees incurred by the MGA for such payment and must pay such fees before entry into further MGA events is allowed.

Eligibility:

Entries are open to amateur golfers:

  1. Who are currently Associate Members of the MGA at the club from which they are playing,
  2. Whose club is a current Member Club of the MGA,
  3. Whose USGA Handicap Index for 18 holes does not exceed 6.4 at the time of entry, and
  4. Who must be at least 55 years of age as of Monday, June 11, 2012.

All entries are subject to rejection at any time by the MGA Tournament Committee.

Players entered in the Championship, except exempt players, will play 18 holes of stroke play in Sectional Qualifying.  The number of available qualifying spots at each site will be determined once entries close and will be posted on the MGA Mid-Players' Championship website.  Any ties for qualifying spots or alternate spots at each site will be played off immediately, hole by hole, until the final qualifiers and alternates are determined.

A contestant may enter only once and attempt to qualify only one day and at one site.

Additional Information

As a continuation to the growing demand for senior events, the MGA Senior Players' Championship premiered in 2000 to go along with the existing MGA Senior Amateur and MGA Senior Four-Ball Championships. This single-elimination, match play event is held concurrently with the MGA Mid-Players' Championship, which creates a unique blended atmosphere for the players.

In 2011, Hazeltine National's Robert Leaf (the #7 seed) disposed of his first four opponents before defeating Gary Thalhuber (The Minikahda Club), 3 & 1 in the Championship Match.  After needing 23 holes to defeat Alan Henningsgaard (Windsong Farm) in the first round, Leaf won his next four matches comfortably.  In fact, Leaf trailed only a total of four holes in those four matches and never longer than one hole.

Leaf defeated 2010 finalist David McCook (Hastings CC) 3 & 1 in the semi-finals, while Thalhuber defeated Luverne's Tim Connell 4 & 2 in the other semi-final.

Defending champion Colby Lund (Interlachen CC) lost in the second round to David Mooty (The Minikahda Club).
