Established in 1997, the MGA Women's Mid-Amateur has become one of the major events in Minnesota women's golf. The Women's Mid-Am is a partnership of the MGA, Minnesota Women's Golf Association (MWGA) and Minnesota Women's Public Golf Association (MWPGA) and regularly draws a strong field of golfers. Yet, any woman with a handicap index up to 25.4 may participate as the field is divided into flights based on handicap.
In 2013, Claudia Pilot (The Legacy Courses at Cragun's) returned to the winner's circle after a ten year absence with rounds of 79-72. Her total of 151, seven over par at the Dutch Legacy at Cragun's Resort in Brainerd, was four better than six time champion Leigh Klasse (Meadowbrook Golf Course) and newcomer Kendal Hake (Heritage Links Golf Club). The win is Pilot's fourth in the event.
Hake, a former Indiana University golfer who recently moved to Minnesota with her husband, lead after an opening round 75. A trio of past champions were only two behind, including Defending Champion Kristin Wagner, Klasse and 2009 champion Alison Hurley. Pilot was alone in fifth after her opening 79.
The second round provided some excitement with the lead changing throughout. On the front nine, Klasse took the lead after an even par 36, with Pilot (36) and Hake (40) two strokes back. However, Pilot took the lead on the par five 16th when she made birdie and Klasse made double-bogey. In fact, Klasse made double-bogey on all three par five holes giving her an incoming 42 and a 155 total. Hake also struggled on the par fives with two bogeys and a double bogey for a 40 and a total of 80 for 155. Neither Wagner nor Hurley could get anything going during the second round and finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
With Pilot's victory, Pilot and Klasse have won ten of the seventeen championships conducted. Other champions include Kristin Wagner (2012), Amy Schintz (2010), Alison Hurley (2009), Lynn Anderson (1998, 2000), Brenda Williams (1999) and Kelly Burley (1997).
