In 1901, the first Amateur Championship concluded the MGA's inaugural meeting at the Meadow Brook Club in Winona. Despite the fact the championship was not conducted in 1942-1944 due to the war, it remains one of the oldest golf championships in the state. Past champions include 10-time champ, Harry Legg, seven-time champ, Harrison "Jimmy" Johnston, five-time champ, Pat Sawyer, and other notable champions, such as the 1996 British Open champ, Tom Lehman, 4-time winner on the PGA Tour and now playing The Champions Tour, Tim Herron, and the 1993 U.S. Amateur champ, John Harris. The most recent amateur champion to successfully defend his title is current PGA Tour player Tom Hoge (2009-2010).
The MGA Amateur also is one of the largest golfing events in the state typically with 700-800 people entering the championship every year. It takes ten or more qualifying sites around the state to narrow down the competitors to a starting field of 156.
