Established in 1997, the MGA Women's Mid-Amateur has become one of the major events in Minnesota women's golf. The Women's Mid-Am is a partnership of the MGA, Minnesota Women's Golf Association (MWGA) and Minnesota Women's Public Golf Association (MWPGA) and regularly draws a strong field of golfers. Yet, any woman with a handicap index up to 25.4 may participate as the field is divided into flights based on handicap.
In 2011, Leigh Klasse (Meadowbrook Golf Course) opened a two-stroke lead after an first round 77. However, a front nine 43 left her looking up at Claudia Pilot going into the last nine holes. After a "pep talk" from her son and caddie Zachary, she responded by recording three birdies for an inward 35 (one-under). Her 155 total was three better than past champions Claudia Pilot (Austin CC) and Alison Hurley (Minnesota Valley CC). Kristen Wagner (Baker National GC) was another three strokes back and took fourth.
Klasse increased her record for number of titles won in the Women's Mid-Amatuer to an astonishing seven out of 15 events, or nearly 50%. Other champions include Claudia Pilot (2001-2003), Lynn Anderson (1998, 2000), Kelly Burley (1997), Brenda Williams (1999), Alison Hurley (2009) and Amy Schintz (2010).
